About ANID and FONDECYT

ANID (National Agency for Research and Development) is Chile's national research and innovation funding agency. It plays a role similar to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the United States, UKRI in the United Kingdom, the ANR in France, the DFG in Germany or the ARC in Australia, and it is the Chilean counterpart of CONICET and CNPq as funders in Argentina and Brazil.

FONDECYT (National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development) is ANID's main instrument for funding individual, investigator-driven basic research, awarded through national peer-reviewed competitions. FONDECYT Regular is comparable to an NSF standard research grant or a DFG Individual Research Grant, while FONDECYT Initiation targets early-career researchers, in the spirit of NSF CAREER or the ERC Starting Grant (at a smaller scale). These equivalences are approximate: budgets, durations and selection rules differ.
